What Fabric Should Beginners Use for Sewing?
If you’re just starting out with sewing, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is what fabric should I use?
With so many options available, it can feel a little overwhelming at first. But the good news is that some fabrics are much easier to work with than others, and choosing the right one can make your sewing experience far more enjoyable!
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best fabrics for beginners and why they’re a great place to start.
Why Fabric Choice Matters
Not all fabrics behave the same way. Some stretch, some slip, and some are much more forgiving than others.
As a beginner, you want a fabric that:
- Holds its shape well
- Is easy to cut and sew
- Doesn’t slip around too much
- Presses neatly with an iron
Starting with the right fabric helps build confidence and makes your finished projects look neater too.
The Best Fabric for Beginners
1. Cotton (Quilting Cotton)
Cotton is by far the most recommended fabric for beginners, and for good reason.
It’s stable, easy to handle, and widely available in beautiful prints and colours.
Why it’s great:
- Doesn’t stretch or distort
- Easy to cut accurately
- Presses crisply
- Ideal for both hand and machine sewing
Perfect for:
- Cushion covers
- Tote bags
- Quilts
- Simple garments

2. Cotton Poplin
Poplin is slightly smoother and lighter than quilting cotton, making it a lovely step up once you’ve tried the basics.
Why it’s great:
- Still stable and easy to sew
- Softer drape than quilting cotton
- Great for wearable projects
Perfect for:
- Simple tops
- Pyjamas
- Lightweight dresses

Fabrics Beginners Might Want to Avoid (For Now)
While it’s tempting to dive straight into all the beautiful fabrics available, some can be tricky to handle when you’re just starting out.
You might want to avoid:
- Stretch fabrics (jersey) – can be tricky to control
- Silky or slippery fabrics – move around a lot when sewing
- Very thick fabrics – harder to sew on a standard machine
These are all great to try later on, just not the easiest starting point!
A Simple Tip to Get Started
If you’re unsure what to choose, start with a cotton fat quarter bundle.
You’ll get a selection of coordinating fabrics to practise with, and they’re perfect for small projects like patchwork, bunting, or simple accessories.
