If you’re looking for a quick sewing project using fat quarters, this pretty fabric bowl is a lovely one to make. It’s soft, gathered and padded, with a practical shape that’s perfect for keeping all those little bits and pieces together.
Use it in your sewing room for threads, notions, clips and haberdashery, or make one for your dressing table, craft room or bedroom. It would also make a lovely handmade gift, especially filled with sewing supplies or other little treats.
The finished fabric bowl measures approximately 8″ x 4″.
A great fat quarter sewing project
One of the nicest things about this project is that you only need two fat quarters of fabric, so it’s perfect for using a coordinating pair from your stash or choosing prints from one of our fat quarter packs.
The design works particularly well with contrasting fabrics, as you’ll see both sides of the bowl as you make it.

Alongside your two fat quarters, you’ll need bias binding, ribbon, toy filling and a small piece of firm interfacing or thick card for the base.
What you’ll need
For this free fabric bowl sewing project you’ll need:
- 2 fat quarters of fabric
- 30″ of 1″ wide bias binding
- 40″ ribbon
- Approximately 100g toy filler
- 7″ square of firm interfacing or a piece of thick card
- Sewing machine and thread
- Pins and scissors
- 6″ circle template
- Ruler with 60 degree markings
- Erasable marking pen
- Hand sewing needle and strong thread
The project uses a ¼” seam allowance.
How the fabric bowl is made
You’ll start by cutting two large fabric circles before marking the sections that form the padded channels around the outside of the bowl.
A firm circle is sandwiched between the fabrics to create the base, then the marked sections are stitched and individually filled with toy stuffing. As the sections are filled, the sides naturally begin to stand up and create that lovely soft bowl shape.
The top is gathered before bias binding is sewn around the edge, with gathered ribbon added as a final decorative detail.
It’s a really satisfying project and a nice way to turn just a couple of fat quarters into something useful for your home.
